Samoan language week, What is an Umu?



What is an umu?
An umu is an underground oven where you cook things under rocks and wood first you heat up rocks then you put the food on. then you cover the food with leaves
What does it need?
Ingredients:

  • Compact Rocks
  • Dry Wood
  • Banana Leaves
  • Coconut and Husks
what is it for?
It is used for cooking food.

How are traditional Samoan skills taught?
Listening and watching what other people are doing.

Is there something you've experienced similar to an umu? What was it? Where did you experience it?I haven't experienced anything much like it yet

Food such as putting coconut cream inside a bunch of leaves in a cup shape and putting that inside a coconut leaf and putting it on the umu. you can cook alot of food like fish, bananas, potatoes and much more.
