Food Testing, Nutrients

Aim: The Aim is to learn about simple or complex sugars, Protein, and foods. and we should try to identify if one food is a complex, simple, protein or carbohydrate food. The food we will be testing on and all of the nutrients are Bread,  Sugar, Egg, Apple, Milk, and Potato.

Hypothesis. What I think is in each foodsFor the Hypothesis, I think That the Bread is a complex, Sugar or lollies is simple sugar an egg would be protein, And Apple would be a Complex, Milk would be a Protein Etc...

Carbohydrates - Sugar - To make Energy
Protein - For Growth - To repair Muscles
Lipids - Fats & Oils - Insulate/Protect, Organs, Energy

Complex -  Long Slow Energy...

Simple - quick Short energy...

Method:
Iodine, we used two drops of iodine in each food...
The Foods, Apple, Banana, Potato.
If the food turned black that means they are a complex sugar
If they turn another color they are a simple sugar
Result: They All seemed to turn black that means they are all Complex

we also put two drops iodine in another bunch of food samples.
Our Test 2 food samples turned yellowish, brownish. that means there are no complex sugars in the foods...

Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.

Equipment: Test Tube, Sodium hydroxide, Copper sulfate, Food sample

Method:
1. Place about 2ml of the sample into a test tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide
2. Add 5 drops of copper sulfate
3. Skate the test tube gently from side to side

Results:
Milk and egg Positive.
Apple, potato, bread, glucose negative

Conclusion I got 4 right, Egg, Milk, apple and bread

Discussion it was fun to do and I would like to do it again but with different foods and chemicals, I learnt what simple and complex sugars and that apples are complex

Changing Our Future

Aim; To look at the different ways we can prevent climate `change in the future.

Changing Our Future

Name 3 fossil fuels?
1. Coal
2. Oil
3. Natural gas

What is the cost?
Carbon Dioxide

The CO2 level has soured since when?
Industrial revolution

What are the effects in the UK?

  1.   Heat waves
  2. Thousands of species die  Animal extinction
How many climate refugees will there be in Britain by 2050?
200,000,000

When will Fairborn be flooded?
Some time in the next 26 years

What are some of the other things that will be 'swallowed by the waves'?
  1. Power stations
  2. Gas plants
  3. Toxic dumps
How can we stop climate change?
  1.    Removing gas boilers
  2.    Buses and cars need to be used by Hydrogen or batteries
  3.    Cut back on meat, stop eating as much
  4.    Fly less
What is the atmosphere called?
Waste Dump .

What is the last statement the reporter made?

We Know what we need to do, we have got the technology. What we lack is the

Political Will.

What can we do?

  1.
  2.
  3.

CURBING CLIMATE CHANGE

What is the one, silver bullet solution?

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1.
  2.

What are 3 others you can think of?
  1.
  2.

Activity: Ranking climate change issues.

Using the worksheet,  rank the issues from climate change.

MY INVESTIGATION

Aim: To look at how I can prevent climate change in the future.

1. Complete the activity Ecological Handprint.

2. Complete the activity Carbon Footprint.

What places will be effected?
All around the coast

What else do we need to think about?
Building houses not on the

What other places around NZ will be affected?
Pacific islands

What does this do to our drinking water?
Put salt in the drinking water

What are the main concerns?
Flooding
Erosion
  1.

What can we do?

  1. Use electric cars
  2. Recycle
  3. Less fossil fuels

What is the one, silver bullet solution?
Something that provides an immediate and extremely effective solutionto a given problem or difficulty, especially one that is normally very complex or hard to resolve. The phrase is almost always used in a statement that such a solution does not exist.

What is the mix of things we need to start doing?
  1. electric
  2. renewable fuels
  3. Using transport thats doesnt use fossil fuels
What are 3 others you can think of?
  1.

  2.
My Investigation
Where does our food come from?

  • Choose your favourite food.

  1. Upload a picture of it.
  2. Draw a picture of it on A4.

On your blog answer the following questions.

  • Where does the food come from (e.g. is it from another province or country, was it purchased or made locally)? Italy,

  • How many kilometers away did the food travel to get to you?

  • What are the main ingredients? Pizza Dough, Tomato sauce, cheese,

  • How is the food packaged? In a box

  • What resources do you need to produce this food item (e.g. land, water, oil, food, etc.)? Oil food

  • Would this item have been processed? Yes

  • Is there anything unique or significant about the food item (e.g. fair-trade, local)?

  • What else do you notice about this food that affects its climate friendliness?
  • Do you think this food is climate friendly (Circle)?    NO

  • Why? Because you need to kill animals to be able to make it and they are trucked to the places wheer they are made

  • If no, what would be a better alternative?

What will you do to stop climate change? Using ideas from the Ecological Handprint and Carbon Footprint list 10 changes that you can make to stop Climate change?
  1.
  2.
  3.

  4.

Hurumanu - Climate Change

Aim: To look at the causes of climate change and how to prevent it.

As you watch the video answer these questions:

What is our greatest threat in thousands of years? Extreme sea level heights, Greater floods, Stronger winds,  Heatwaves

How do we see climate change affecting the globe?
  1.   greater heatwaves
  2.    stronger winds
  3. floods
  4.   Extreme sea level heights

What is needed to change history?
Stop Fossil fuels

Is climate change a man made distaster?
yes

Dramaitc action must be made in the next _10_ years to change it?
Why is our climate changing?

What is causing the warming trend of the climate?
The rubbish
What is the main problem?
People burning fossil fuels

What are examples of these?
coal
olil
methane gas

Burning fossil fuels releases what gas?
Carbon Dioxide

How much hotter now is our world?
1 degree

What do we call this global warming?

How is this affecting creatures / animals like bats?
It is killing them

What percentage of species are near exteinction?
8%

How could this effect the world ecosystems?
things cant eat and they die

What global change was seen and recording breaking last year?
wild fires

How is climate change affecting our weather systems?
1. more rain
2. flash flooding
3. super storm

What is another ettect of climate change?
ice melting

What will happen if the ice melts in Antarctica and the Arctic?
countries will be consumed

How does this affect people?
countries dissapear so they have nothing to do and they die

What other things affect oceans change?
warmer water

What does to much heat do to coral?
kill it

Why did some industries not want to stop burning fossil fuels?
they wouldent make money and need to shut down

Stop at 23.39

Investigation

You can decide on how you would like to do this investigation. Your presentation could be on the blog, slides, or PowerPoint.

Write a definition, upload an image and list where these fossil fuels are mined.

  1. CoalImage result for coal
  2. OilImage result for oil
  3. Natural GasImage result for natural gas

Write a paragraph and upload an image about each of these renewable energy.

  1. Solar
  2. Wind blows the turbines and makes them move that generates energy
  3. Waves, machines that push air into the mashing that pushes the thing around and generates energy.
  4. Hydro, they are like waterfalls water comes from a lake and goes into a hydro

Write a 6 sentence reflection about what you have learnt about Climate Change and how it is going to affect us.
