Metal Reactions.

 Metal + Acid

Equation - Metal + Acid >>> metal salt + hydrogen

Method - Get a splint and light a Bunsen burner, then you need to get 2ml of Sulfuric acid and put it in a test tube, then put a small piece of metal in the test tube, the metal will dissolve and the test tube will heat up, after that you need to put a boiling tube on top of the test tube and put the test tube inside, wait 1 minute and light the split. then with the splint you need to lift up the big boiling tube, keep it upside down, and put the splint inside the boiling tube, it will make whistle or pop sound.

When we had done the steps to make the whistle, Cody put the splint inside the boiling tube and it made a very loud whistle sound. this experiment was fun because there wasn't a lot to do, but the stuff we had to do was easy. if we were to do this experiment i would like to add more acid and a lot more metal to try and make the sound pop / whistle as loud as possible.

Making a Metal Oxide

Method - Light your Bunsen burner, Hold the piece of magnesium in the scissor tongs but make sure you are holding the very end of the magnesium piece. hold the magnesium over the fire for about 3 seconds in the middle of the flame, not the top, not the bottom, directly in the middle, it should light on fire, that's when you should look away, and just look at it from the corner of your eye, if you look directly into it, it  can permanently damage your eyes.

Testing for the presence of Oxygen

Method - Light the Bunsen burner and add the manganese dioxide to the boiling test tube, add 2 millilitres of hydrogen peroxide. then what you need to do it light the splint for a few seconds and blow it out, the splint will still be hot and glowing, then you need to put the splint in the test tube, not in the hydrogen peroxide but in the middle, and the splint will relight

Metal Carbonate + Acid >>>>>> Metal Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
                                      CaCO3          2Ha                 CaA2            H2O            CO2

Equipment - Two Boiling tubes, Delivery Tube and Bung, Bunsen Burner, Test Tube rack, Wooden Splint, a bottle of acid, Small amount of metal carbonate, Test tube tongs, Safety Glasses.

Method - Light your Bunsen Burner and add a tiny pea sized amount of  metal carbonate into one of the boiling tubes, place this boiling tube into a test tube rack, make sure you have the bung and delivery tube ready. add 5ml of acid to the boiling tube, hold the other boiling tube with the tongs and capture the gas, when you think the tube is full your lab partner will light a wooden splint, then put the splint into the test tube and see what happens.

DTE Reflection Blog Post

DTE Reflection Blog Post

For the past few weeks we have been making a slide show about Encryption methods & Techniques, there are many ways to encrypt or decrypt a message. I've made a slideshow on how to decrypt a message and the methods you can use, the first three are easy, second 3 are medium and the last 3 are the hard ones to learn. There is also a website called discover crypt, this is the website I've been using to learn about all of these methods. Discover Crypt

Easy: Pig Pen, Caesar Cypher, Simple Transposition.

Medium: Rail Fence, Atbash Cipher, Polybius Square Cipher

Hard: Columnar Transposition, Viginere Cipher, Bifid Cipher.

Ive added a description and a photo of the table you use to decrypt/encrypt messages.

Bob Geldof and Midge Ure...

In the 1970's Bob Geldof was an Irish singer, he was born in Ireland in 1951. he went to a private catholic school. although he went there he didn't like it very much and thought it was boring. he was bullied for being bad at rugby. when he left school he got a couple of jobs but didn't like any of them. then later on he moved to Canada and learnt how to make music. that's when he wanted to become a singer and a musician. Bob Geldof was in a group called the Boomtown Rats.

He donated to charity and promoting charitable events. He liked to sing and make money, with some of that money get would donate to charity and promote charitable events for all around the world, but Africa in particular. He was involved in a group/band called the Boomtown Rats. they were a group of musicians and singers who made alot of money back then.

In the 1970's Midge Ure was a scottish singer and musician. he was born on the 10th of October in 1953. he was in a few bands called Ultravox, Thin lizzy, Visage, Silk, Rich Kids, Band Aid 30 and Band Aid. He was in a band called Band Aid with Bob Geldof. The main song known by them were "Do they know it's Christmas?" and "I dont like Mondays".
"Do they know its christmas" was made to fight the famine of ethiopia  because the didnt have enough food and water to survive. it was made by many singers trying tomake the money to help them. all of the money (200m) want to the people in ethiopia.

Acid Rain

Acid rain

Acid rain is formed when factories burn fossil fuels and let the gas up in thew air through big tubes, the gas combines with clouds which makes the clouds heavier, then the acid rain can harm trees, dissolve buildings, make water toxic so you cant drink it, and it can kill fish. or it can just kill land. it ruins the environment

Petri Dish Experiment:

Aim: To observe effects of Acid Rain,

Method: in a petri dish place items around edge. Wet dry ingredients with drop of water.. In the middle put a weigh boat. add a spatula of sodium sulphate into the weigh boat. and 5 drops of sulfuric acid. Quickly close the lid.

Hypothesis: I think that the acid will destroy all of the items and completely dissolve them so there is nothing left of it apart from the acid. the ingredients are, Petal, Calcium Carbonate, Apple, Universal Indicator, Bromothymal Blue. we added a spatula of sodium sulphate into the weigh boat.

Here are the photos of the results, The universal indicator went a light pink and the Bromothymal blue went a gold/green/yellow colour. the calcium carbonate just went clearer

Woodstock | Give Peace A Chance

A Couple of weeks ago in social studies we were learning about Woodstock and the Vietnam war. for one of the tasks we had to  listen to a song about anti-war/peace the song I chose was "Give Peace A Chance" by John Lennon. it just repeats "give peace a chance" over and over again non stop. the song is basically saying to give peace a chance and stop the wars with Vietnamese.

DTE - Cryptography

Hello, for the past couple of weeks in DTE we have been learning about cryptography and how to encrypt things, and decode them. I have made an infographic poster about it and what is is about, I have made 6 parts about it and how it works. we needed to watch a video and get things from it to put it on a poster. Heres the screenshot of the poster that I made for it.
